Anti-Snap Cylinders: Why Every London Door Needs One

Lock snapping is the dominant burglary technique in London and across the UK. A burglar inserts a screwdriver or pair of pliers into the exposed portion of a standard euro cylinder and applies downward force. In under 10 seconds the outer section snaps off, exposing the locking cam and allowing the door to be opened by hand. Over 22,000 UK homes are broken into this way every year, and a standard cheap cylinder offers zero resistance.

A TS007 3★ anti-snap cylinder addresses this with a sacrificial break point engineered into the outer section. When force is applied, the cylinder snaps at a point that has already been isolated from the internal cam — the mechanism can no longer be reached or turned. The cylinder also includes anti-pick, anti-bump and anti-drill features mandated by the TS007 3-star rating.

Does your door have a euro cylinder?

Look at your front door lock. If you see an oval metal barrel (about 30–35 mm wide) in the centre of the lock body — that is a euro cylinder. Common on:

  • UPVC and composite front doors (the vast majority of post-1990 UK builds)
  • Many wooden and aluminium doors fitted since the 2000s
  • Most communal building entry doors
  • Garage side doors and conservatory doors

We size and fit the cylinder to your door on the same visit. Cost: £95–£145 fitted, including the cylinder, sizing and 2 keys. We can upgrade the cylinder during a lockout callout, so you leave with better security than you had before.

BS3621 Locks — What Your Insurance Requires

Most UK home insurance policies contain a condition requiring at least one BS3621-approved lock on every final exit door. A claim made after a break-in can be refused if the policy condition was not met — even if the policy is otherwise valid.

Nightlatch (Yale-style) BS3621

A double-locking rim lock that deadlocks from the outside with a key and from the inside with a thumbturn. Cannot be loid (credit-carded) or forced without breaking the frame.

£75–£120 fitted
5-lever Mortice Deadlock BS3621

A mortice lock with 5 levers — the insurance standard. Suitable for wooden doors. Matching sashlock available where a latch is also needed.

£125–£195 fitted

We provide an installation certificate on request — some insurers ask for written confirmation that a BS3621 lock was fitted by a qualified locksmith.

Lock Change After Moving House

Approximately 70% of residential burglaries in London are committed using a key. When you move into a property, an unknown number of previous occupants, tradespeople, estate agents and cleaners may have copies of the existing keys. Changing all exterior locks is the single most effective security step you can take on moving day.

We typically quote £150–£240 for a full moved-house lock change — front door, back door and any garage or outbuilding doors, with 3 keys cut per lock. A TS007 3★ anti-snap upgrade on the front euro cylinder is included at no additional charge on moved-house bookings (just ask when you call).

Burglary Repair — Secure Your Home Tonight

A burglary leaves your home exposed. We prioritise same-hour attendance on burglary calls, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Our locksmiths arrive prepared to board, repair or replace whatever is needed to make the property secure before we leave.

UPVC Door Lock Repair London

The most common UPVC door failure is a worn multipoint gearbox — the mechanism inside the door edge that, when you lift the handle, extends a series of hooks, rollers and cams into the frame. When the gearbox wears out, the handle drops, the key becomes stiff or the door will not lock at all.

We carry the most common gearbox brands on our vans: ERA, Winkhaus, Mila, Fullex, Yale, Avocet, Hoppe and Kenrick. In most cases we can match your exact mechanism and complete the repair in a single 60–90 minute visit. Price: £175–£295 fitted.

If the mechanism is fine but the cylinder is stiff or the key no longer turns smoothly, we can replace just the cylinder — UPVC cylinders are the same TS007 3★ anti-snap type and cost £95–£145 fitted.

Frequently Asked Questions — Locksmith London

How much does a locksmith cost in London?
A standard emergency lockout starts from £89 for non-destructive entry during business hours. Night-time callouts (10 pm – 7 am) typically carry a £20–£30 surcharge. Lock changes range from £75 (Yale nightlatch) to £295 (UPVC multipoint mechanism). We confirm the price before starting — no hidden charges.
How quickly can you reach me in London?
Central London (Zones 1–2): 25–35 minutes from your call. Inner boroughs (Zone 3): 35–50 minutes. Outer boroughs: 45–60 minutes. A technician is despatched while you are still on the phone.
Do you try non-destructive entry before drilling?
Yes — always. Our locksmiths are trained in lock picking and bypass techniques. A cylinder is only drilled as a last resort when the lock cannot be opened any other way. In most standard lockout cases the door is opened without damaging the lock.
What is an anti-snap cylinder and do I need one?
Lock snapping is the most common method of forced entry in London: a burglar breaks the exposed part of a euro cylinder and turns the mechanism directly. Anti-snap (TS007 3★) cylinders have a sacrificial break point that disengages the cam before the internal mechanism is reached. If your front door has a euro cylinder — the oval barrel in the centre of the lock body — you almost certainly need one. Over 22,000 UK homes are broken into via lock snapping each year.
My insurer says I need a BS3621 lock — what does that mean?
BS3621 is the British Standard for insurance-approved locks. For a nightlatch (Yale-style) it means a double-locking rim lock; for a mortice it means a 5-lever deadlock or sashlock. Most home insurance policies require at least one BS3621 lock on every final exit door. We fit only BS3621-compliant hardware and can provide a certificate of installation if your insurer requests one.
Can you fix my UPVC door — the handle drops and the door won't lock?
Yes. Dropped handles on UPVC doors are caused by a worn multipoint gearbox — the mechanism inside the door that drives the hooks and rollers when you lift the handle. We carry the most common makes (ERA, Winkhaus, Mila, Fullex, Yale, Avocet) on our vans and can replace the mechanism in a single visit, usually under 90 minutes.
I've been burgled — can you secure my home tonight?
Yes. We operate 24 hours a day. Our priority on a burglary callout is: (1) make the door secure immediately — boarding or lock replacement; (2) assess the frame for damage; (3) recommend upgrades to prevent recurrence. We can have a locksmith with you within the hour.
Do you cover all 32 London boroughs?
Yes — we have locksmiths positioned across all 32 boroughs plus the City of London. Barnet, Camden, Islington, Hackney, Tower Hamlets, Southwark, Lambeth, Wandsworth, Hammersmith, Ealing, Brent, Harrow, Hounslow, Richmond, Kingston, Merton, Croydon, Bromley, Lewisham, Greenwich, Bexley, Havering, Barking, Newham, Waltham Forest, Redbridge, Enfield, Haringey, Westminster, Kensington & Chelsea, Hillingdon.
